This project area is now being seen as one of the highest priorities within the OCP – it is a real focus for the actions of all the OCP Groups – comprising Town Hall Square and St. Werburgh Street, which have the potential to become a real hub of creativity, performance, events, alfresco, street animation and gatherings right at the heart of the City.
It also comprises some of Chester’s most magnificent destinations and amenities – The Cathedral, the proposed Project Discovery at the former Barclays Bank building, Town Hall, Storyhouse, Northgate Phase 1 including the new market, cinema; and includes two smaller public spaces at Abbey Square and Exchange Square. The area also includes Northgate Phase Two – the redevelopment of the Forum and buildings along Hamilton Place and links to Watergate Street.
A dedicated partnership working group is being established led by Tim Stratford, Dean of Chester Cathedral and involving the principal stakeholders in the area. The identified priorities for their work are – the transformation and animation of Town Hall Square and St. Werburgh Street as the creative heart of our city, the major Northgate 2 development opportunity and the Cathedral led Discovery Centre.
The Council is progressing the mixed-use Northgate Phase Two and will formerly interact with potential developers later this year
Project Discovery is advancing and intends to increase visibility of the Cathedral, expand its cultural offer and help to connect further with city communities.
The working group is currently thinking about how to progress the creative transformation of Town Hall Square and St. Werburgh St as glorious spaces at the heart of the City.
